Queen of the Hills — Kanchenjunga views, world-famous tea, UNESCO Toy Train and sunrise over Everest
Darjeeling, perched at 2,050 metres in the Himalayan foothills of West Bengal, is one of India's most iconic hill stations. The panoramic view of Kanchenjunga — the world's third-highest peak at 8,586 metres — forms a breathtaking backdrop that has inspired painters, writers, and travellers for over a century. Tiger Hill, a short drive from town, is legendary for its 4 AM sunrise views that silhouette Kanchenjunga and, on clear winter mornings, even reveal the distant peak of Mount Everest. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway — affectionately called the Toy Train — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, chugging through hairpin loops, tea gardens, and misty mountains since 1881. Darjeeling's tea gardens produce some of the world's most prized brews. The muscatel flavour of first and second flush Darjeeling tea is sought after globally, and estate tours at Happy Valley or Makaibari offer an intimate glimpse into the art of tea making. Batasia Loop, a stunning spiral railway loop with a memorial garden dedicated to Gorkha soldiers, is one of the most photographed spots in town. The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park houses rare species including the snow leopard, red panda, and Siberian tiger in near-natural habitats. The living root bridges and pine forests of the surrounding hills, Buddhist monasteries like Ghoom with its golden Maitreya Buddha, and the lively Mall Road bustling with Tibetan handicrafts and local momos make Darjeeling an irresistible destination.
March to May is ideal when rhododendrons bloom across the hillsides and skies are clear for Kanchenjunga views. October and November offer crisp post-monsoon clarity — perfect for photography and mountain sightings. December to February brings snow and a festive atmosphere but some roads can be icy. Monsoon from June to September is lush and dramatic but expect landslides and cloud cover. Tiger Hill sunrise is most reliable from October to March.
