Ancient rock fortresses, mist-covered tea plantations, elephant gatherings, eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and some of Asia's finest beaches — Sri Lanka packs an extraordinary world into one small island.
Sri Lanka — the teardrop-shaped island at the tip of India's subcontinent — is one of Asia's most rewarding travel destinations and one of its most underrated. Within a single week, you can stand atop an ancient rock fortress, ride the world's most scenic train through tea-shrouded mountains, watch wild leopards hunt at dusk, float in a dugout canoe past weaving storks in a mangrove lagoon, and wake up to a beach whose water is the colour of a sapphire. For Indian travellers from Delhi, Noida, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai, Sri Lanka is accessible with short flights (1.5-2.5 hours), no visa stress, and an exchange rate that makes it incredibly affordable.
Luxytrix crafts Sri Lanka tour packages for every type of traveller. Honeymooners from Pune, Jaipur, and Ahmedabad fall in love with Mirissa's whale-watching and the boutique hill-country hotels. Families from Surat, Chandigarh, and Lucknow love the Cultural Triangle — Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa — and the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. Photography enthusiasts from Kolkata and Indore are drawn to the Kandy Esala Perahera (August procession with 150 decorated elephants), the Nine Arches Bridge at Ella at blue hour, and the ancient ruins at Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa bathed in golden afternoon light.
Sri Lanka Facts: Sri Lanka has 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites — one of the highest concentrations in Asia. The Colombo-Kandy-Ella train journey is consistently voted one of the world's most scenic rail journeys. Sri Lanka's Yala National Park has the world's highest density of leopards. Blue whale sightings off Mirissa are practically guaranteed November-April.
Rising 180 metres above the jungle like a ship run aground, Sigiriya is Sri Lanka's most iconic landmark and one of Asia's greatest archaeological wonders. Built by King Kasyapa between 477-495 CE, the fortress-palace once housed 1,500 people atop a volcanic plug of bare rock. The approach ascends via a 5th-century gallery of remarkable frescoes (18 of the original 500 "cloud maidens" survive), the famous Lion Paws platform (two enormous carved lion claws that were once part of a complete lion gatehouse), and the summit plateau with the ruins of Kasyapa's palace and swimming pools carved directly into the rock.
The train from Kandy to Ella (via Nanu Oya for Nuwara Eliya) is routinely voted one of the world's most scenic rail journeys. For 7 hours, the train winds through a continuous landscape of emerald tea estates, jungle waterfalls, ancient tunnels, and mountain precipices. The 9 Arches Bridge at Ella — a colonial-era viaduct emerging from the forest — is one of Asia's most photographed spots. Our packages include reserved seats in the observation cart for this unmissable journey.
Sri Lanka's Yala National Park has the world's highest density of wild leopards per square kilometre — approximately one leopard per square kilometre in Block 1. Yala also shelters 44 varieties of mammal (including sloth bears, water buffaloes, crocodiles, and spotted deer), 215 bird species, and is one of few places where you may see elephants, leopards, sloth bears, and crocodiles in a single safari. Evening game drives around the Yala lagoons as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean horizon is an experience unique to Sri Lanka.
Kandy, Sri Lanka's last royal capital and cultural heart, is built around a lake and dominated by the Sri Dalada Maligawa — the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. Sri Lanka's most venerated religious site, the temple holds a tooth relic of the Buddha that has defined Sri Lankan kingship and national identity for 1,700 years. The temple complex is most atmospheric at dawn and dusk when the sound of drummers and the scent of incense wafts across the lake. Kandy's August Esala Perahera — 10 nights of processions with elephants, fire-dancers, and kandyan drummers — is one of Asia's greatest festivals.

Climb Sigiriya Rock at 7:00-7:30 AM for two reasons: the light is magical (golden, raking across the jungle), and you'll beat the tour groups who arrive at 9-10 AM. The climb takes 45-75 minutes depending on fitness. Carry water and wear sun protection.
Indians require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) — apply online at eta.gov.lk. Cost: USD 35 (approximately ₹2,900). Single entry, 30 days. Apply 4-7 days before travel; processing is usually within 24 hours. Luxytrix handles all ETA applications for our customers at no extra charge.
Blue whales are seen off Mirissa from November to April (peak: January-March). The boats leave at 6:30 AM from Mirissa harbour. Sighting rates are 95%+ in peak season. Sperm whales, dolphins, and manta rays are also commonly seen. Book early as boats fill up quickly in season.
Sri Lankan cuisine is excellent for Indian vegetarians: kottu roti (chopped flatbread stir-fry), rice and curry (dhal, jackfruit, pumpkin, eggplant in coconut milk), pol sambol (fresh coconut relish), and hoppers (bowl-shaped rice flour pancakes). The food is similar to South Indian cooking but with a distinctive coconut and curry leaf character.
Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR); 1 LKR ≈ ₹0.29. Budget LKR 3,000-5,000/day (₹870-1,450) for mid-range meals and activities. Sri Lanka is extremely affordable for Indian tourists — a good beach restaurant meal costs LKR 800-2,000 (₹230-580). Our packages start from ₹29,999 including flights and all main sights.
